Simple Beer Chicken Recipe

The origin of beer chicken is not clear till date. However, some say that this recipe has originated from Southern parts of the United States, while some say it was a part of hobo culture. The preparation of beer chicken is not a rocket science. There were different methods of beer chicken recipes. In fact, this is a little tedious process. The recipe mentioned here is totally different from the normal procedure. Though it requires the chicken to be marinated overnight, which is a time-consuming process, but the final taste of the curry is delicious. There is no specific rule to use a certain brand of beer. Cooking comes into perfection on a trial and error basis. Hence, there is no brand name mentioned for the beer here. This recipe also involves the preparation of beer gravy which is the perfect combination of the beer chicken.

INGREDIENTS

Basic Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 12 ounces of beer
  • 2 Carrots

Ingredients for seasonings

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Ingredients for Beer Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 cups beer
  • Half cup flour
  • 1 Onion
  • 2-3 Garlic cloves
  • 2 cups stock

Directions for beer chicken

Place the chicken in a roaster and add enough beer so that half of the chicken is covered with beer. Let this roaster be refrigerated overnight. After 6 hours, turn the chicken to another side and let it marinate for few more hours. After the marinating at least for 12 hours, remove the roaster from the refrigerator and remove the beer.

Now mix olive oil, rosemary, sage, salt, pepper and dried thyme and apply it all over the chicken and leave it for about 3 to 4 hours. To this chicken, add another 4 cups of beer. Place the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees and let it be cooked for around 90 minutes. Some people like to add lemon juice in the seasoning for better taste.

This chicken needs to be taken out and remove the excess liquid from it. Save this liquid to prepare beer gravy. Now add carrots, mushrooms to the chicken and let it cook in the oven for another 30 to 45 minutes.

Preparation of beer gravy

  1. Heat a saucepan and melt the butter. Add the flour to this and whisk it until it is smooth without any lumps.
  2. Now add onion and garlic to this and cook for about 2-3 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  3. To this mixture, add the beer taken from the marinated chicken and vegetable stock. Let this boil for some time. Constant stirring is required until the liquid becomes thick.
  4. Add a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper for additional taste.
  5. Serve beer chicken with the beer gravy on a serving plate. The cooked beer chicken along with the beer gravy is a perfect combination. I hope you will enjoy it!
